Hydration 101

The idea of staying hydrated seems simple, right? But research shows that nearly 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Water plays a fundamental role in sustaining every single function of the human body, from regulating body temperature to supporting cognitive function. Let’s take a look at how to get hydrated and stay that way and why it matters.

Why Hydration Matters

The human body is mostly water so it makes sense that water plays a critical role in nearly every physiological function. Every cell, tissue, and organ require water to function correctly. From aiding digestion to facilitating nutrient transport, water is the key to keeping everything running smoothly.

·      Regulates body temperature – Though a lot of us find it to be a nuisance when we’re not intentionally doing something physically strenuous, sweating serves a vital purpose by regulating body temperature. But when you’re dehydrated, the body's ability to sweat efficiently is decreased, which in turn increases the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or even heatstroke.

·      Boosts cognitive function and mood -- Ever felt a midday slump in concentration or experienced a mood dip seemingly out of nowhere? Dehydration might be the culprit. Studies have shown that even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function, leading to a decrease in focus, alertness, and short-term memory. Dehydration can also influence mood, causing irritability, anxiety, and fatigue.

·      Improves physical performance -- Whether you're a professional athlete or a casual gym-goer, proper hydration is key to optimizing physical performance. During exercise, the body loses water through sweat, which, if not replenished, can lead to dehydration and hinder performance. From reduced endurance to impaired strength and coordination, dehydration can sabotage your fitness goals. Staying hydrated not only helps sustain performance but also enhances your post-exercise recovery.

·      Supports organ function -- Beyond its role in temperature regulation and cognitive function, water is crucial for supporting the proper functioning of vital organs. Adequate hydration aids kidney function by facilitating the removal of waste products and toxins through urine. It also helps maintain cardiovascular health by promoting proper blood circulation and oxygen transport. Even the digestive system relies on water to break down food and absorb nutrients efficiently.

Tips for Staying Hydrated

So, knowing all the above, it's clearly essential to prioritize hydration in your daily routine. Here are some tips to make staying hydrated easy:

·      Keep water nearby -- Make it a habit to sip water throughout the day, aiming for around eight glasses (64 ounces) per day, adjusting based on your individual needs and activity level.

·      Schedule it -- smartphone apps or schedule reminders to prompt yourself to drink water regularly, especially if you tend to forget.

·      Check your urine color -- A pale straw-like color indicates adequate hydration, while darker urine may signal dehydration.

·      Add more hydrating foods to your diet -- Fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges can contribute to your daily fluid intake.

·      Factor in exercise -- Drink water before, during, and after physical activity to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes.

·      Listen to your body – It may seem obvious but paying attention to your thirst level and drinking water whenever you feel thirsty isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone.

Hydration is a cornerstone of self-care and with a few small changes, you can boost your intake and know that you’re doing your best to maintain good physical and mental performance levels. So, raise a glass and sip your way to better health!
