Healthy Fats and Why You Need Them

For decades, fat was considered a villain when it came to healthy eating. Now we know that not all fats are bad, and in fact, there are some super healthy fats that are essential for your body and brain to function at their best. The key is knowing the difference between unhealthy fats and the fats that actually benefit your health. Let’s get into it!

Why Your Body Needs Healthy Fats

Fats do a lot more than just give you energy. Here are some of their biggest roles.

  • Brain Health: Your brain is nearly 60% fat, and it needs healthy fats to function properly.

  • Heart Health: Certain fats help lower bad cholesterol and support a healthy cardiovascular system.

  • Nutrient Absorption: Some vitamins (A, D, E, and K) can only be absorbed when fat is present.

  • Cell and Skin Health: Healthy fats keep your cells strong and your skin glowing.

  • Satiety & Energy: They help you feel full and energized longer.

Types of Healthy Fats

Not all fats are equal. Here’s a breakdown of the ones you want more of.

1. Monounsaturated Fats may help lower bad cholesterol, improve heart health and support blood sugar balance. Sources are:

  • olive oil

  • avocados

  • nuts (especially almonds, cashews, peanuts)

 2. Polyunsaturated Fats can reduce inflammation, support brain and eye health, and may reduce risk of chronic disease. Sources are:

  • fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies)

  • walnuts

  • chia seeds

  • flaxseeds

  • canola, corn, soybean, and sunflower oil

Fats to Limit

Some fats can be harmful if eaten in excess:

  • Trans fats: Found in processed and fried foods. Linked to increased risk of heart disease. Sometimes listed as hydrogenated oils on nutrition labels.

  • Excess saturated fat: Found in fatty cuts of meat, butter, and full-fat dairy. A little is okay, but balance is key.

It’s important to remember that fat isn’t the enemy! It’s a vital nutrient your body needs. By focusing on healthy sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish, you can give your body lasting energy, protect your heart, and even keep your brain sharp.

So go ahead and add that drizzle of olive oil to your salad or enjoy a piece of salmon for dinner. Your body and brain will thank you!
