Winter is Coming! Here’s How to Prep for Flu Season

As the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, flu season comes knocking. While it’s not possible to guarantee you won’t get sick, there are plenty of steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from the flu and keep your immune system strong. A little preparation now can go a long way in keeping you healthy through the fall and winter months.

Get Your Flu Shot Early

The single best way to protect yourself is to get your annual flu vaccine. It helps reduce your risk of catching the flu and, if you do get it, lowers the chances of severe illness. Doctors recommend getting vaccinated in early fall so your body has time to build immunity before flu season peaks.

Stock Up on Essentials

It’s always smart to be prepared. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked with these tried-and-true aids for when you feel like garbage.

  • Fever reducers and pain relievers

  • Thermometers

  • Tissues

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Electrolyte drinks or hydration packets

Having these on hand means you won’t need to rush to the store if you or someone in your household gets sick.

Practice Healthy Habits

Good daily habits are powerful tools against flu and other seasonal illnesses.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.

  • Clean high-touch surfaces like phones, doorknobs, and countertops regularly.

Strengthen Your Immune System

Your immune system is your body’s best defense, so give it the support it needs.

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Stay active with regular exercise.

  • Get enough sleep (7–9 hours for adults).

  • Manage stress, which can weaken immunity.

Know When to See a Healthcare Provider

Most flu cases can be managed at home, but it’s important to know when to seek medical help. Contact a healthcare provider if you have any of the following symptoms.

  • High fever that doesn’t improve

  • Shortness of breath or chest pain

  • Severe weakness or confusion

  • Symptoms that improve but return worse

Flu season doesn’t have to catch you off guard. By getting vaccinated, practicing healthy habits, and stocking up on essentials, you’ll be better prepared to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy. Remember that prevention and preparation are the best defenses against the flu.
